How fast can HbA1c come down?

HbA1c follows your sugar with a lag. A 2016 analysis found about half of a change shows within about 30 days, and about 80% within 50–70 days. So a retest after a month shows partial progress, and one at about three months shows most of it. ICMR suggests testing every 3 months while you're above target. How far it falls depends on your starting point, your medicines and how much your food and weight change.

How fast can HbA1c come down?

Faster than many people think, but not overnight. Your daily sugar can drop within days of a change in food or medicine. HbA1c catches up over the next two to three months.

A 2016 analysis in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology put numbers on it. About 50% of the change towards a new HbA1c level is reached in about 30 days, and about 80% in 50 to 70 days.

Here's what that means. Say your HbA1c is 8.5%, and you make changes that will settle it at 7.0%. After one month you might see about 7.8%. After two months, nearer 7.3%. These are worked examples, not promises.

Why does HbA1c take 3 months to change?

HbA1c measures sugar stuck to haemoglobin in your red blood cells. Those cells last a few months, and new ones are made all the time. As old cells with more sugar are replaced by new ones with less, the number falls.

Recent weeks count for more than older weeks. That's why a good month shows up on the next test even if the three months before weren't good.

HbA1c jaldi kaise kam kare? What brings it down fastest?

The biggest drops come from changes that lower your sugar all day, rather than after one meal:

  • Taking your medicines every day as prescribed. If doses are missed, the test can't show what the medicine can do.
  • Eating less carbohydrate at each meal, especially rice, rotis, poha, upma and sweets.
  • Losing weight if you carry extra, especially around the waist.
  • Walking after meals, even for 10 minutes.
  • Fixing the overnight rise if your fasting sugar is high, with your doctor's help.

How much can HbA1c drop in 3 months?

It depends on where you start. People who start higher usually see bigger drops. Some reference points:

  • Metformin alone lowers HbA1c by about 1.1 percentage points on average, compared with a dummy pill, in a 2012 pooled analysis of trials.
  • In the DiRECT trial in the UK, people with type 2 diabetes for under 6 years followed a very low calorie diet and lost an average of 10 kg. 46% were in remission at 12 months. Among those who lost 15 kg or more, 86% were.

Remission, in the 2021 international definition, means an HbA1c under 6.5% at least 3 months after stopping diabetes medicines. That should only ever be done with your doctor.

What helps most with an Indian diet?

The amount of carbohydrate matters more than the type of grain. A 2025 ICMR-INDIAB study in Nature Medicine found about 62% of Indian calories come from carbohydrate. Swapping refined cereal for whole wheat or millet flour, at the same amount, wasn't linked to lower diabetes risk. Replacing 5% of carbohydrate calories with plant or dairy protein was.

In practice:

  • Fill half the plate with sabzi or salad, a quarter with dal, chana, paneer, fish, chicken or eggs, and a quarter with rice or rotis.
  • For breakfast, add protein, such as besan chilla, moong dal dosa or eggs, rather than plain poha or upma alone.
  • Take curd or buttermilk with meals rather than sweet tea or juice. ICMR says all fruit juices are best avoided.
  • Keep sweets for small portions on festival days, not daily.

When should I retest HbA1c?

ICMR suggests HbA1c every 3 months if you're not at target or are working to tighten control, and every 6 to 12 months once you're at target. A test at one month shows only part of the change, so don't be discouraged if it hasn't moved much.

Use your glucometer or a sensor in between. Fasting and after-meal readings show progress weeks before HbA1c does.

If your HbA1c is above 9%, ICMR's treatment plan suggests starting with two medicines, or insulin if you have symptoms. Expect your doctor to talk about medicines as well as food.

What HbA1c should I aim for?

ICMR's general target is below 7%. That equals an average sugar of about 154 mg/dL. Older adults and people with complications may be given a looser target.

HbA1cApproximate average sugar
9%212 mg/dL
8%183 mg/dL
7%154 mg/dL
6.5%140 mg/dL

Is it safe to bring HbA1c down very fast?

Usually it's safest in steps. Diabetes UK advises lowering HbA1c in stages rather than with a sudden large drop. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea such as glimepiride, cutting food sharply can cause lows. Talk to your doctor before a big change in diet, and never stop or cut a medicine on your own.

Why might my HbA1c not match my sugar readings?

ICMR notes there are some limits to using HbA1c in India. Illness, steroid medicines and changes in your blood can shift it. If your HbA1c doesn't fit your home readings, tell your doctor. They may check for anaemia or use other tests.

Common questions

How fast can HbA1c come down?

About half of a change shows within about 30 days and about 80% within 50–70 days, based on a 2016 analysis. Most people see the full effect of a change at a test about three months later.

Can HbA1c come down in 1 month?

Partly. A retest after one month usually shows about half of the drop you'll see at three months.

HbA1c jaldi kaise kam kare?

Take medicines daily as prescribed, eat less rice, roti and sweets at each meal, add protein, walk after meals and lose weight if you carry extra. Agree any big change with your doctor.

How much can HbA1c drop in 3 months?

It depends on your starting level and what changes. Metformin alone lowers it by about 1.1 percentage points on average. People who start higher usually see bigger drops.

How often should HbA1c be tested?

ICMR suggests every 3 months if you're above target and every 6–12 months once you're at target.

Do millets lower HbA1c?

Not on their own. A 2025 ICMR-INDIAB study found swapping to whole wheat or millet flour at the same amount wasn't linked to lower risk. Eating less carbohydrate overall and more protein was.

What is a good HbA1c?

ICMR's general target is below 7%, about 154 mg/dL average sugar. Your doctor may set a different target for you.

Is it bad to lower HbA1c too fast?

It can cause lows if you take insulin or sulfonylureas, and Diabetes UK advises lowering it in stages. Plan big changes with your doctor.
