Proton Therapy Abroad: Where to Access It and Whether It'...
Cancer Treatment · 3 · July 27, 2025
Only 120 proton therapy centers exist worldwide — half in the United States. A single course of proton therapy costs $50,000-$120,000 in the US. In India, the same treatment at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (Chennai) costs $15,000-$30,000. In South Korea: $25,000-$40,000.
What Makes Proton Therapy Different
Conventional radiation (photon beams) deposits energy along the entire path through the body — entering, passing through the tumor, and exiting, damaging tissue on both sides. Protons stop at a precise depth (the Bragg peak), depositing maximum energy at the tumor and virtually nothing beyond it. This physics advantage means 40-60% less radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
Where Proton Therapy Actually Helps
Strong evidence: pediatric cancers (children's developing tissues are most vulnerable to collateral radiation damage), skull base tumors (chordomas, chondrosarcomas), ocular tumors, and brain tumors near critical structures. Moderate evidence: head and neck cancers (reducing salivary gland damage and xerostomia), hepatocellular carcinoma, and re-irradiation of previously treated areas.
Weak or absent evidence: prostate cancer (multiple trials show equivalent outcomes to IMRT at 3x the cost), early-stage breast cancer, and lung cancer. The TPC-1 randomized trial (2024) comparing proton to photon therapy for prostate cancer found identical cancer control at 5 years — making the $80,000 price premium hard to justify for this indication.
Global Proton Centers for International Patients
Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (Chennai, India): India's first proton center, operational since 2019, using IBA's Proteus Plus system. Pricing: $15,000-$30,000. Samsung Medical Center (Seoul, South Korea): $25,000-$40,000 with a dedicated international patient program. Medipol Mega Hospital (Istanbul, Turkey): Turkey's first proton center opened in 2023. Pricing: $20,000-$35,000. Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland): The European pioneer in proton therapy — premium pricing at $40,000-$60,000 but with the longest track record.
Cost Comparison
| Country | Cost Range (Proton Therapy (full course))
| United States | $50,000–$120,000
| India | $15,000–$30,000
| Turkey | $20,000–$35,000
| Mexico | $30,000–$50,000
Key Takeaways
- Proton therapy reduces healthy tissue radiation exposure by 40-60% compared to conventional
- Strongest evidence for pediatric cancers, skull base tumors, and ocular tumors
- Prostate cancer trials show no benefit over cheaper IMRT — don't overpay
- India's Apollo Proton Centre offers treatment at $15,000-$30,000 vs $50,000-$120,000 in the US
