Buy CGM Without Prescription: Where to Get Freestyle Libre & Dexcom Over the Counter
Diabetes Technology · 6 · February 12, 2026
You should not need a doctor's appointment to find out what rice does to your blood sugar. In many countries, you do not. Continuous glucose monitors are available without prescription in a growing number of markets — and the price differences between countries are enormous.
Where You Can Buy a CGM Without a Prescription
United Kingdom: Freestyle Libre 2 and 3 are available over the counter at Boots and online pharmacies. Price: approximately £50 per sensor (14 days). No prescription needed since 2020.
📊 Diabetes by the Numbers
India: Abbott Freestyle Libre is available OTC at Apollo Pharmacy and online through Amazon India and Flipkart Health. Price: approximately ₹3,500–4,500 per sensor (14 days). That is roughly $42 — a fraction of the US price.
Germany and EU: Available OTC in most EU countries. German pharmacies stock Libre 3 at approximately €60 per sensor.
United States: Freestyle Libre 2 became OTC in late 2024. Dexcom Stelo (a simplified version of G7 designed for non-insulin users) launched as an OTC product. Price without insurance: approximately $89–99 per month for Libre, $99 for Stelo.
Australia: Libre available OTC. Subsidised under the NDSS (National Diabetes Services Scheme) for eligible patients — as low as A$6.60 per sensor with the subsidy.
The Price Gap Is Absurd
The same Freestyle Libre 3 sensor costs $75 in the US, £50 in the UK, ₹4,000 in India ($48), and A$92 in Australia (or A$6.60 subsidised). If you travel internationally or have family abroad, purchasing sensors overseas can cut your annual CGM cost by 30–50%. This is the same pharmaceutical arbitrage that makes medical tourism viable for procedures.
Connecting Your CGM to Journey for Health (jforh.com)
Once you have a sensor, connecting it to Journey for Health (jforh.com) takes under two minutes. Three options:
Bluetooth Direct (no account needed): Open the CGM Monitor, tap "Connect via Bluetooth," and hold your phone near the sensor. Works with Chrome, Edge, and Opera browsers using Web Bluetooth API. Reads directly from the sensor's standard glucose service (UUID 0x1808). No LibreView or Dexcom account required.
Cloud API: Sign into your existing LibreView (for Libre) or Dexcom Developer (for Dexcom) account. The platform pulls readings via their official APIs and streams them in real time via WebSocket.
CSV Import (Medtronic): Export your CareLink data as CSV and upload it. Manual but works for Guardian Connect users who do not have API access.
Once connected, you get Glucose Weather (sunny/partly cloudy/stormy), crash prediction (45-minute low forecast), ARIMA-based 2-hour glucose projection, and full trend charts with in-range statistics.
For Non-Diabetics Too
A growing number of health-conscious people without diabetes are wearing CGMs to understand their metabolic health. The Ultrahuman M1 metabolic tracker — also supported by Journey for Health (jforh.com) — is marketed specifically to this audience. If your concern is prediabetes prevention rather than diabetes management, a 2-week CGM trial can reveal insulin resistance years before blood tests catch it.
