Cervical Disc Replacement: An Alternative to Spinal Fusion
Orthopedic Surgery · 2 · September 19, 2025
After cervical spinal fusion, the segments above and below the fused level absorb extra stress. Within 10 years, 25% of fusion patients develop adjacent segment disease (ASD) requiring additional surgery. Artificial disc replacement was designed to prevent this — and a 2024 Spine Journal 10-year follow-up of 1,200 patients confirms it works: ASD rates dropped from 25% to 9%.
How Artificial Cervical Discs Work
The damaged disc is removed (just as in fusion) but instead of inserting a bone graft and metal plate, the surgeon implants an artificial disc — typically a metal-on-polyethylene or metal-on-metal design. The Mobi-C (Zimmer Biomet), Prestige LP (Medtronic), and ProDisc-C (DePuy Synthes) are the three FDA-approved options. All preserve 8–12° of flexion-extension at the operated level.
10-Year Clinical Data
The FDA's 10-year IDE data for Mobi-C shows: 92% satisfaction rate (vs. 86% for fusion), 15% reoperation rate (vs. 27% for fusion — largely driven by ASD), and identical neurological outcomes. Two-level disc replacement showed even greater advantages over two-level fusion, with the ASD rate dropping from 34% to 11%.
International Options
Cervical disc replacement at Fortis Gurugram or Apollo Chennai costs $6,000–$8,000 per level — roughly one-eighth of the US price ($50,000–$65,000). Turkish centers like Acibadem Maslak offer the procedure for $10,000–$14,000. The implants used internationally are identical FDA-approved devices manufactured by the same companies.
Cost Comparison
| Country | Cost Range (Cervical Disc Replacement (per level))
| United States | $50,000–$65,000
| India | $6,000–$8,000
| Turkey | $10,000–$14,000
| Mexico | $14,000–$20,000
Key Takeaways
- Artificial cervical disc replacement cuts adjacent segment disease from 25% to 9% at 10 years compared to fusion.
- Two-level disc replacement shows the greatest advantage over fusion: 11% ASD rate vs. 34%.
- The same FDA-approved Mobi-C, Prestige, and ProDisc implants are available in India at $6,000–$8,000 per level.
